Cleaning and Sterilizing Used Medical Equipment

Used medical equipment is a good, cost-effective alternative to the brand new expensive medical equipment. Although it has been pre-owned and operated, the condition is usually relatively good to like new. As long as you know where to find them, you shouldn’t have a problem with the quality. Trusted legitimate suppliers aren’t allowed to sell you junk so you can rest assured knowing that what you’re getting something that is worth more than what you paid.

If you are renting your refurbished medical equipment, it is crucial to effectively maintain your machine. That is to say that the cleaning, disinfection and sterilization are not just about keeping your used medical equipment germ-free for yourself; it’s so that the successive users after you can enjoy a sanitary unit too.

There are several ways you can clean your used medical devices such as used EKG machines. It all really depends on the means you have available and what kind of machines you’re dealing with. Equipment with fiberscopes and endoscopes like catheters are employed repetitively. Because of this, these kinds of used medical equipment are more prone to infection. To pre-clean them, you can use an ultrasonic cleaner to wipe the surface. For the inner wall of the tubes and ducts, you should employ a good ammonium or iodine-based disinfectant such as ethanol. Another method of deodorizing and cleansing is with heat. Many technicians today use thermal sterilization to clean their used medical equipment because at a certain temperature, bacteria will cease to live. In addition, it prevents more bacteria from infecting the surfaces because the heat will make it a hostile environment for more of the same harmful microbes to repopulate. The microbes that typically spread bad odors are also removed in the process.

If ultrasonic or thermal cleaners simply aren’t in your budget or feasible in other ways, you can use a homemade solution to clean and sterilize your used medical equipment. First utilize detergent water to pre-clean the device. Then immerse your equipment--or if it’s too big, just wipe down--in a chlorine dioxide solution to more thoroughly sterilize the spaces that the detergent water can’t effectively accomplish. Leave your instruments to air dry or wipe them with special cloths that won’t leave fibrous residues.
