Different Types of Wheelchairs

In order for a physically disabled person to get from one place to another they rely on a wheelchair. Like the name suggests it is a chair with wheels that a person sits in and is able to move around. It allows people who cannot walk or have trouble walking the ability to move around independently and lead active lives. There are two main types of wheelchairs. There is the manual wheelchair and the power wheelchair.

A manual wheelchair is the simplest form of wheelchairs. The user uses their hands and arms to move the wheels of the chair and push themselves in motion. The manual wheelchair is advantageous because it allows the most cost-friendly type of wheelchair. It is also advantageous because it can be folded up making it easy to store in the home when not in use, and easy to transport in a car from one place to another.

The powered wheelchair uses motors to help the person move. Usually there is a joystick like control system that the user maneuvers for movement. However, if the user is unable to move their arms and hands, other control systems are available to allow them the independence of moving themselves around. Powered wheelchairs allow a person to move around with much more ease and comfort. The wheelchairs can be customized to the users needs. Generally the suspension system of a powered wheelchair is much better and the maneuverability is much easier.

In today’s society people confined to a wheelchair are no longer looked down upon as someone who cannot take part in society. They are able to live happy active lifestyles with the right medical equipment. There are many sports for people in wheelchairs these days. There is wheelchair basketball and tennis, downhill wheelchair racing and wheelchair skiing. With the popularity of wheelchair sports there are also wheelchairs designed for the specific activities, with customization including the speed and agility of your wheelchair.

Wheelchairs are available in different sizes, shapes, colors and specifications depending on your needs. Furthermore, there is also an increased amount of equipment to make life with a wheelchair even easier. Home medical equipment suppliers now produce wheelchair lifts, ramps and vans to make getting you and your wheelchair from place to place even easier.

Whether you choose a manual or a powered wheelchair there are plenty of styles to choose from, and there are plenty of things to keep you active and happy.
