Hospitals go through hundreds and hundreds of supplies everyday. Medical equipment and supplies are always in high demand, however. When a person is prepped for surgery, the nurses or doctors have to open up a package of sterile supplies. These items include everything from the surgical instruments to the clean-up materials. For instance, there are very durable blue rags that are used, sometimes in the dozens, during surgery. In order to keep costs down, however, these rags are packaged in groups of five or ten. Once the package is opened in a surgical room, these rags cannot be used anywhere else. The nurse may only use two or three from one package and the others end up in the trash. This discard is such a waste of medical equipment and supplies!
These rags are great for cleaning your home or using for car repair. When you use them for these purposes, it does not matter that they are no longer sterile! You are just going to get them dirty anyway! Sadly, thousands of hospitals throw away these perfectly good items when they could easily be reused. Many doctors and nurses, however, do their best to salvage these items. They either take them and use them in their own homes or donate them to schools or other organizations that use these rags for messy art projects or for cleaning up the desks at the end of the day.
There are also pieces of hospital and home medical equipment and supplies that would help out countries that do not have access to this type of equipment due to the high cost. Often times these extra supplies are shipped down to Mexico to be used in hospitals there. Extra supplies can always go to someone or someplace that definitely needs them, so if the hospital or clinic that you work at often throws away large amounts of non-sterile, but still usable supplies, take charge! Set up a donation program and arrange a place to which you can deliver or send these items. So many people will be incredibly thankful for your donation!
