Have you ever heard of the Doctors without Borders program? This organization consists of physicians and doctors trained worldwide who wish to give their time and skills to helping individuals living in war-torn countries. These nations do not have the opportunity to support permanent doctors or specialists because their countries simply do not have the funds to provide higher levels of education for their own citizens. Thousands of people worldwide suffer from malnutrition, natural disasters, and epidemics. Doctors without Borders sends individuals into these poverty-stricken countries in order to help relieve the human suffering that grows worse there every day. These individuals go where no one else wants to go and, by doing so, they save lives of innocent victims one patient at a time.
Organizations like Doctors without Borders do great good for the world community. However, they cannot do this work alone. The professionals themselves are a huge help but these physicians need medical equipment and supplies in order to make a difference. If a young boy has broken his arm, a doctor can realign the bones but without a way to make a cast or splint, the arm will not heal properly. The supplies that are the most in need are not even large, expensive, or difficult to find. These doctors need items such as tongue depressors, disposable needles, and bandages.
The medical industry in North America and Europe has very strict guidelines for the medical equipment and supplies that can be used daily. In order to make packaging less costly, medical equipment suppliers bundle anywhere from five to ten needles in one package. If the doctor only uses three of them, the rest need to be disposed of even though they have never been used. These needles are still clean and perfectly safe! Therefore, they can be sent over to Doctors without Borders in order to help those that who have less.
Hospitals around the country have extra medical equipment and supplies that they box up again daily so that they can be used in war-torn countries. If you want to help these types of organizations, then help organize a donation system at the local hospital or health clinic. You can help save lives too!
