Medical Imaging Equipment Makes Medicine Safer

Early twentieth century doctors had to practice without medical imaging equipment and many of their diagnoses could only be described as very good guesses. These conclusions were based on external tests, analysis of the symptoms, and study of family medical history. If they did need to see inside the body, they would have to perform invasive surgeries. While doctors today make sure to maintain completely sterile operation rooms, any type of deep incision could lead to infection. If the person's immune system is already weakened due to disease or cancer, bacteria or viruses that normally would be easily conquered only add to the immune system's heavy load.  As a result, today physicians rely heavily on medical imaging equipment to diagnose and treat disease.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines and ultrasounds are just two of the many machines that have advanced the practice of medicine significantly. A MRI machine uses powerful polarized magnets that excite hydrogen protons of water molecules in the body's tissue. These excited nuclei produce a signal that result in a decipherable picture of the human body. Ultrasounds on the other hand, use sound waves to produce images. The term ultrasound refers to all sound that is at a frequency above human hearing. These sound waves are sent into the body and the machine measures their echo. Knowing how long it took the wave to return and how strong the echo was are just a few of the measurements that produce the image.

Medical imaging equipment has enabled medicine to be more accurate than ever before and is one of the most useful medical products available. These images, whether they are mapped by sound waves or magnetic pulses, allow physicians to get a much better idea of what is going on inside the body. The images not only help save the lives of the present patient, but also of future patients.  By studying hundreds of these images, medical researchers can see patterns and characteristics of certain diseases that significantly advance our growing medical knowledge.

If you are interested in purchasing imaging equipment for your clinic, you do not need to buy the latest models. These medical machines can be extremely expensive. You should consider refurbished medical equipment instead because these pieces are just as accurate and long lasting as new pieces, but they are offered at an affordable price.
