An AED is a very valuable piece of medical equipment which stands for "Automated External Defibrillator". It is a portable device similar to the large devices used by emergency room staff to save someone going into cardiac arrest. The portable machine helps victims of cardiac arrest by recharging their heart through the use of electronic shock. Typically paddles are placed on the chest of the victim and an electronic shock is sent through those paddles to stimulate the heart.
Traditionally defibrillators were only used in hospitals and ambulance. They were large bulky machines that could only be used by trained professionals. In fact many of these hospital grade defibrillators are dangerous in the hands of an untrained professional and can do more harm than good if used as home medical equipment.
However, recent technology has reduced the size of these bulky defibrillators and given the user and easy interface to work with. These small, sometimes laptop sized, defibrillators allows any individual with minimal training to be able to administer life saving medical assistance. These defibrillators often have automated controls that tell the user exactly what treatment to give the patient and offers step-by-step instruction on how to administer care.
It has made it possible for schools, airports, shopping malls, and venues to equip themselves with a defibrillator medical product and be able to give a person suffering from cardiac arrest the medical attention they need while waiting for paramedics to arrive. In an emergency a defibrillator could mean the difference between life and death.
